Persistent & Resistant Infections

Chronic & Multidrug-Resistant Infections

Research on persistent and multidrug-resistant infections within the Rare & Resistant Research Platform — focusing on patient experience, diagnostic delay, access barriers and real-world implementation across health systems, with a particular focus on conditions such as multidrug-resistant urinary tract infections (MDR UTIs).

Patient-centred approach

The programme follows a patient-centred approach and is informed by close exchange with patient communities and self-help organisations. Patient experience and real-world care pathways play a central role in identifying diagnostic delays, treatment barriers and unmet medical needs in multidrug-resistant UTIs.

Research programme

The research programme focuses on the analysis of care pathways, diagnostics and structural barriers in the management of multidrug-resistant urinary tract infections — including how patients move between outpatient care, specialist services, microbiology diagnostics and hospital treatment.

Research focus

Care pathways

Mapping of patient journeys to identify delays, fragmentation and bottlenecks across sectors (primary care, specialists, diagnostics and hospitals).

Diagnostics & access

Analysis of diagnostic pathways (incl. microbiology and resistance testing), access barriers and guideline implementation in real-world MDR UTI care.

Real-world evidence

Evidence synthesis with focus on implementation, access to effective therapies and real-world management strategies in resistant UTIs.

Programme development

The programme is currently being further developed and expanded, with additional research activities planned as the initiative grows.

Collaboration

We welcome scientific exchange and collaboration with clinicians and research groups working in antimicrobial resistance, chronic infections and implementation research.
